Phil Brown komt uit... waar dacht je, ja weer iemand uit Austin Texas, de music city. Toch valt hij helemaal buiten het verwachtingspatroon van wat we vandaar wekelijks binnenkrijgen, geen Americana, geen singer songwriter, wel blues, maar dan van het "moderne" soort. "Fusionbluesrock" om 't een naam te geven. Phil is een gitaarvirtuoos en deze cd "The Jimi Project" is een ode aan Jimi Hendrix. Geen klakkeloos nagespeelde versies, maar wel degelijk bewerkingen, die soms tamelijk ver van het origineel verwijderd zijn en toch de stempel van Phil Brown dragen. Met die stempel bedoelen we, zijn gitaarspel dat werkelijk fantastisch is, en erg in het verlengde ligt van wat Jeff Beck doet, en zijn stem die dan weer heel sterk aan die van Jack Bruce doet denken zodat je regelmatig dat "Cream" geluid hoort. Een andere gelijkenis is dan ook die met de muziek van Eric Gales, niet moeilijk, vermits die ook wat (veel) door Hendrix beinvloed is. Zoals ik net al zei is Phil's gitaargeluid zeer sterk gelijkend op dat van Jeff Beck, zo erg zelfs, dat toen ik Phil voor het eerst op de radio hoorde, dacht te doen te hebben met een nieuwe opname van Jeff. Als je luistert naar zijn versie van "Fire" bijvoorbeeld zal je begrijpen wat ik bedoel. Door de eigen bewerkingen van de songs klinkt de cd meer als één vast geheel, de songs horen meer samen, wanneer we hier de originelen zouden samenzetten zou het meer een cd geworden zijn met nummers die door de verschillende periodes waarin ze opgenomen zijn, zeer veel van elkaar verschilden, hetgeen nu niet het geval is .Phil koos ook zoveel mogelijk voor minder bekende song, voor zover dit het geval kan zijn bij Hendrix. Buiten "Fire" "Voodoo Child" en "Purple Haze" geen overbekende songs, hetgeen heel verstandig is. Wel prachtversies van nummers als"One Rainy Wish" en "Ain't No Telling". De ganse cd ademt door de aparte, dromerige stem van Phil een rustige sfeer uit, zelfs al worden er regelmatig heavy gitaarriffs afgevuurd. Bassist Jimmy Haslip overbekend van de band Yellowjackets en Gary Novak op drums (van Allan Holdsworth en Chick Corea faam) geven al wat aan dat de richting waarin we ons begeven wat jazzrock getint is, maar toch van de nodige blues voorzien, met deze twee muzikanten, mogen we zonder overdrijven zeggen dat we hier luisteren naar 3 virtuozen samen,daarom is het onbegrijpelijk dat Phil hier niet meer bekendheid bezit. Zijn andere cd "Cruel Inventions" waarvan ik op het net enkele fragmentjes kon horen, lijkt me nog beter en ik hoop de kans te hebben U ook met deze te mogen laten kennismaken, want deze man is een fantastisch gitarist die moet gehoord worden!

Phil Brown is from....Where do you think he's from? Yes, once again i'ts
someone from Austin, Texas, the music city. But he's not like most of the
artists we receive cd's from almost every day of the week, living in that
fine city. It's no Americana, no singe - songwriter, o.k, it's blues, but
modern fusion blues, so to say. Phil is a real guitar virtuoso an with this
cd" The Jimi Project" he pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix. No exact covers, but
renditions which are sometimes far from the originals and have the typical
Phil Brown sound. Phil's guitarsound is really fantastic and he sounds a lot
like Jeff Beck, his voice on the other hand, keeps reminding me of Jack
Bruce, so you sometimes get impressions of "Cream". It also reminds me of
Eric Gales, which is understandable, because he also has a lot of Hendrix
influences. Like I already said, Phil sounds a lot like Jeff Beck, even that
much, that when i heard him the first time I thaught it was a new record by
Jeff. If you hear "Fire" on this cd, you will understand what I mean. By
making the songs his own, it sounds more like a "unity", the songs relate to
each other. When we would have a compilation album of Jimi's versions, it
would be an album with different styles and sounds, because of the different
recording dates and studios. But here it's one unity. Phil also chose not to
play the "hits"., with the exception of Fire", Voodoo Child" and "Purple
Haze", the songs are not too famous (as long as you can say so with Hendrix
recordings). Insread we get re-makes of songs like "One Rainy Wish" and
"Ain't No Telling". With his special, dreamy voice Phil makes the cd sound
peaceful and a bit laid back, although every now and then the guitarriffs
sound really heavy. Bassplayer Jimmy Haslip, well known from Yellowjackets
and Gary Novak (Allan Holdworth & Chick Corea) indicate it's a little jazz
rock influenced, but with a big portion of blues. With these two musicians,
we can easily say we are listing to 3 virtuoso, each on his own instrument,
it seems unbelievable Phil is not more famous around here, hope we can do
something about that. His other cd "Cruel Inventions" which I was able to
listen to a few short fragments on the net, seems just as good as this one,
and I hope I can review that one for you too, because this man is a
fantastic guitarplayer which needs to be heard !
